Sectional Stars

The best sectional times recorded in Melbourne and Sydney from last weekend’s racing..

MELBOURNE

PINKER PINKER 23.68
She was steadied back from an awkward gate in her race at Sandown 21/7 but after hugging the inside rail for the duration, she loomed to take the lead at the 200m mark before scoring with authority.

BARANGAROO 23.91
This two year old, soon to be three was having her second start in a race when she handed in an effort worth noting at Moonee Valley over 1200m. Look for connections to find the right race for her shortly.

ILLUSIONARY 24.33
The slow start proved to be very costly, especially considering that she was stepping back in distance from 1600m to 1200m (admittedly after a freshen up) at Sandown 21/7. She ran very quick closing figures!

LUCY’S CASH 24.89
She was most unlucky to lose at her previous start despite actually missing a place at Geelong but she atoned in style for the defeat at Sandown 21/7 at what was only her second run back from a spell.

BEOWOLF 25.08
Punters weren’t actually falling over themselves to accept the short odds offered about him at Sandown 21/7 but after running the race to suit himself in front, he was always in control when it mattered late.

ST CLEMENT DANES 26.16
When he last landed the prize he was well backed at Kyneton two starts ago but at Sandown 21/7 all money was for a stablemate. That didn’t stop him from finishing off the strongest when it counted.

METUNG BELLE 26.22
This four year old was stepping up in distance to 2400m for the first time in her career when she posted the best final 400m sectional of her race at Sandown 21/7. Look for her to break through soon.

SEA HUNTER 26.61
He was only having his second start back from a spell when he was never a winning hope at Sandown 21/7 but he did wear away like a horse who can win over more ground in similar class this campaign.

JAGGER CROW 26.64
After settling well back and wide, he maintained a strong run from the mid stages of his race at Sandown 21/7. He prevailed late in a very tight finish, building further on an excellent winning strike rate.

SYDNEY

PURENESS 23.55
He is a previously unraced customer who was conceding race day experience to almost all of his opposition when he very much looked the part, Canterbury 21/7. Expect this three year old to now win better races.

GIRESUN 23.85
He was never a chance in his race over 1400m at Randwick 24/7 in what was only his second run back from a spell but he did finish his race off as stylishly as any other campaigner on the day. He just wants further.

QUIDNUNC 24.32
She showed no early pace over 1250m before settling down midfield on the fence at Canterbury 21/7 when she was resuming from her spell. After steadily trailing up before the turn, she hit the line hard to score.

KUDETA 24.39
Unless the weather totally fines up in Sydney immediately, we’ll be dealing with wet tracks for a few more meetings ahead and if the tracks do stay soft, this horse can win soon after a good effort at Randwick 24/7.

SEA LORD 24.60
He wasn’t the best to jump when he was on debut at Canterbury 21/7 but he quickly mustered pace to enjoy a dream run, one out and one back. The winner was too good late but he can win soon in similar class.

OUR CANNAVARO 24.72
It was only in the last stride that he edged his nose in front in his race at Canterbury 21/7 after he had finished off on the extreme outside in the best ground. He can however continue to improve.

MARKAB 24.85
He followed a similar path in Race Two at Canterbury 21/7 as Quidnunc did earlier. They both settled midfield on the inside before finishing off wide out. Markab made a step directly from Maiden class in style.

THE INVINCIBLE ONE 25.75
He’s been in work for some time but another win isn’t beyond him. He was only claimed late when he carried plenty of weight at Canterbury 21/7. On the day, he didn’t finish off in the best ground.

INCITEMENT 25.88
He drew a wide gate in his race at Canterbury 21/7 but on paper he looked likely to cross over in front without spending too much petrol. That wasn’t the case, forgive him for the defeat. Similar class soon suits.

Round 18 Preview

Round 18 kicks off tonight with Essendon hosting St KIlda..

Essendon v St Kilda

Etihad

Friday, 7.40pm

The Bombers arrested their mid season slump with a narrow victory over the Kangaroos. Bomber debutant Kyle Hardingham starred with four goals. The Saints meanwhile weren’t at their best but were able to snatch a draw in the dying minutes of their bruising encounter with the Hawks. The Saints renowned defensive zone seems to struggle against Essendon’s over attacking game style, with the Bombers having won their past two meetings. -PZ

Zammit: While the Saints should win the Bombers often challenge them. Back Essendon with the help of a 30.5 point line at $1.92.

Richards: St Kilda has lost their past couple to the Bombers but with Nick Reiwoldt getting close to his best should make amends. The Saints could blow them away and win by over 39 points ($2.15).

Carlton v Collingwood

MCG

Saturday, 2.10pm AEST

Collingwood has hit a rich vein of form winning its past five by an average of 53 points. Dane Swan, Alan Didak and Scott Pendlebury completely blitzed the Tigers last weekend and will be hard to stop again. Carlton overcame the Eagles last week but has been far from impressive in recent times. Chris Judd needs to get more support in the middle from Marc Murphy and Bryce Gibbs both of whom have been struggling lately. - PZ

Zammit: Collingwood has smacked the Blues by around 9 goals in their past two encounters. Expect the same and back Collingwood over 39.5 points ($2.10).

Richards: The Pies should be able to force the Blues into enough mistakes to keep their good form going. The Pies are $1.30 to win by over 15 points for your multis. For a little more value they are $2.10 to win by over 39 points.

Port Adelaide v Hawthorn

AAMI

Saturday, 3.10pm AEST

Port Adelaide upset cross town rivals Adelaide last week but one wonders where the passion and intensity they demonstrated in that game has been for the previous two months.

Hawthorn paid the penalty for an interchange infringement that turned the fortunes of last week’s game, and probably their season. The draw leaves them six points outside the top four. They will win here but need a team above them to slip up if they are to earn a vital finals double chance. - PZ

Zammit: Port is just as likely to return to being an insipid side this week. Back the Hawks to win by over 39.5 points ($3).

Richards: Port has a reasonable record against the Hawks, but Hawthorn is up there with the best teams around at the moment. Put Hawthorn ($1.33) into a multiple.

Sydney v Geelong

ANZ

Saturday, 7.10pm AEST

For one of the rare times under Paul Roos’ stewardship the Swans showed absolutely nothing last week when handed a 73 point smacking by Melbourne. Geelong was merciless against Brisbane, in what appeared to be not much more than a glorified training session for the Cats. Geelong has seven straight victories over Sydney, with Gary Ablett averaging 37 possessions in his past four encounters with them. A major miracle would be needed for anything to change on Saturday night. - PZ

Zammit: Geelong will win but there is little value in the normal betting markets, instead back Gary Ablett to top the disposal count ($3.40).

Richards: The Cats will win again. They are $1.40 to win by over 15 points which looks another good leg for a multiple.

Brisbane v Melbourne

Gabba

Saturday, 7.10pm AEST

The Lions return home after being belted at their past two. The Demons past six quarters have been good and they will be full of confidence after last week’s exciting thrashing of Sydney. The Demons were fast and skilful and the Lions have struggled to stop sharp midfields at their past two. If Melbourne can play with the same flair it can win again. The Lions will need quite a change of form from their two stars up forward in Brendan Fevola and Jonathan Brown if they are to stop the rot. - PR

Zammit: Brisbane has been a disgrace for months yet amazingly start favourites. Load up on the Demons ($2).

Richards: Melbourne is $2.80 to win by over 15 points. On form that is a good bet.

Richmond v Adelaide

MCG

Sunday, 1.10pm AEST

The Crows good run of form was halted by the Power in last week’s Showdown. The Tigers never looked like coping with the Pies with Trent Cotchin and Daniel Jackson on the sidelines. With both missing again this week the Tigers may not have the depth through the midfield to contain a Crows side that has been much better than last week’s showing. - PR

Zammit: A toss of the coin affair, but will stick with Richmond at home ($2.42).

Richards: The Crows are $1.65 to win which is worth considering for a multiple. For some value they are $4.75 to win by over 39 points which they are capable of doing.

Western Bulldogs v North Melbourne

Etihad

Sunday, 2.10pm AEST

The Bulldogs made it three impressive wins on end when they demolished the Dockers last week. The under-manned Kangaroos dropped a crucial four points to the Bombers but there were excuses. However, the Bulldogs belted them earlier in the year in the infamous Scott Thompson pushing Barry Hall episode. It came when the Bulldogs were 10 goals up. They could easily get out to a similar lead here. - PR

Zammit: The Bulldogs have hit solid form. Back them to lead at the end of every quarter ($1.40).

Richards: The Bulldogs are flying and if allowed the time and space could belt the Roos. They are $2.10 to win by over 39 points.

Fremantle v West Coast

Subiaco

Sunday, 4.40pm AEST

The Dockers are showing signs of tiring and with some key personnel missing have dropped out of the top four. The Eagles continue to cough the ball up but have a dangerous forward in Mark LeCras. He got plenty of it last week but was a little selfish. He is likely to be a smarter this time. The local derby factor could see the Eagles lift and they are some chance of causing an upset over a Dockers side whose confidence could be low after last week’s mauling from the Bulldogs. - PR

Zammit: Expecting Fremantle’s recent stranglehold on the derbies to continue, back them by under 39.5 points at $2.25.

Richards: Maybe finish the weekend with a roughie and take the Eagles to win by less than 40 points ($3.75)

Best bet — Zammit: Melbourne ($2.00) Richards: St Kilda by over 39 points ($2.15)

Best multi — Zammit: Hawthorn over 39/Melbourne /Fremantle under 40 = $13.50

Richards: St Kilda over 39/Collingwood over 15/Hawthorn/Geelong over 15 = $5.20

Black time for Wallabies

The Wallabies are set to face their toughest challenge on Saturday night meeting an imposing All Blacks outfit in Melbourne..

Australia v New Zealand

Melbourne

Saturday 8pm AEST

The Wallabies are set to face their toughest challenge on Saturday night meeting an imposing All Blacks outfit in Melbourne.

Granted, the Wallabies started their 2010 Tri-Nations campaign in empathic fashion, smashing the Springboks 30 to 13 at Suncorp Stadium last weekend. However, the All Blacks also comprehensively outplayed the South Africans, easily accounting for them in the opening two Tests of the current series.

The recent history between the cross Tasman rivals has all been one way traffic, with the All Blacks having won the last seven meetings between the two. In fact, Australia and the Bledisloe Cup are virtually strangers, with the Wallabies not having held the coveted trophy since 2002.

The biggest concern for coach Robbie Deans heading into the match is the loss of Quade Cooper, who has been in fine form. Rather than move Matt Giteau back to fly-half it is expected that Berrick Barnes will slot straight into Cooper’s spot.

This Test could be the defining moment of Barnes’ international career. After debuting at age 21 in the 2007 World Cup, Barnes appeared to have the world at his feet with some breathtaking performances, but has appeared to have lost his way in recent times. He now gets his chance to resurrect his career.

The Wallabies backs were at their best against the Springboks and plenty of credit must go to Giteau who had a sensational game and is starting to look at home at inside centre. Scrum half Will Genia also constantly threatened and used the space around him well.

I thought James O’Conner had a good game considering he was stationed in his relatively unfamiliar position on the wing, further cementing his position in the team. Most notably was his defensive work, laying several solid tackles.

The Wallabies backs however face a tough challenge coming up against the creative likes of Dan Carter, Ma'a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Cory Jane and Mils Muliaina, all of whom are in sensational form.

Interestingly both sides trusted their backs against the Springboks by tending to keep the ball in hand rather than opting for quick territory by kicking it. If both sides remain true to style then we are set for a very entertaining free running game.

Significantly, the return of Benn Robinson from injury last week had a huge impact on bolstering the Wallabies forwards, who with locks Dean Mumm and Nathan Sharpe helped form a more experienced scrum, not looking as fragile as they have been on occasions.

More importantly the back row combination of Richard Brown, David Pocock and Rocky Elsom is starting to combine well, and these players were particularly good against the Springboks at the breakdown.

However, they face the feared All Black power forwards headed by Tony Woodcock, Keven Mealamu, Owen Franks and Brad Thorn; while Richie McCaw, Jerome Kaino, Kieran Read form an awesome combination in the back row.

I fear for the Wallabies that the forwards will prove to be the game breaker. Quite simply the All Blacks forwards are too powerful for their Wallabies counterparts. The brutal features of the game, the collisions, scrums and breakdown are the aspects that should see the New Zealand team triumph yet again.

Back the All Blacks to win by 1 to 12 points.

Old enemies clash again

Collingwood and Carlton clash on Staurday afternoon at the G..

Collingwood v Carlton

MCG

Saturday, 2.10pm AEST

Collingwood has Carlton well and truly covered in their clash at the MCG on Saturday.

Many will talk this up as a “blockbuster”, saying current form can be thrown out the window, but the reality is one side is marching towards a genuine premiership opportunity, while the other is stuck in no-man’s land.

Collingwood are purring along nicely, following up their impressive win over the Saints two weeks ago with a mauling of the Tigers last week.

Dane Swan is in sensational form, averaging 37 possessions a game from his past seven outings. Carlton’s Andrew Carrazzo is the man most likely faced with the near-impossible task of stopping him, although coach Brett Ratten may surprise by opting for second gamer David Ellard. I’m tipping Swan will break the 40-possession barrier this time.

Backing Swan up in the middle is Scott Pendlebury who is laying a genuine claim for All Australian selection, while Dale Thomas has lifted another level this year, producing career-best form.

Then there is Darren Jolly, who started the season slowly but has quickly become a key man in this charging Collingwood line-up. Jolly is likely to smash the Blues’ Robert Warnock and Shaun Hampson.

Jolly has been backed up by Leigh Brown, who while not a natural ruckman has appeared to have found his niche. He imposes himself physically on games.

In the forward line Alan Didak appears at the top of his game, delivering on that great potential. The big question, of course, is can he maintain it come September?

Meanwhile, Carlton is fast becoming a one-man show. And even that one man, Chris Judd, no longer appears to be the force he was. When Judd was dominating at the Eagles he had a great support cast around him. At Carlton he may have some talented players around but they are failing to back him up.

Marc Murphy may still be racking up the touches but he struggles to have an impact. Bryce Gibbs’s use of the ball has deteriorated, and he is in such bad form that he is on the verge of being dropped.

Then you have Jordan Russell, who had a brilliant first half of the season but has gone missing of late. Likewise, Heath Scotland can count himself lucky that a lack of depth keeps him in the side.

Collingwood will plot against Carlton’s midfield by focusing on tiring Judd. To do so they will implement their round six tactic of rotating a number of players on him. Look for players like Dale Thomas, Sharrod Wellingham and Ben Johnson to each spend five minute bursts on Judd.

Carlton’s biggest problem is their lack of a genuine spine. Jarryd Waite is the only “tall” standing up. Michael Jamison has gone backwards, Setanta O’hAilpin is no longer in the team and young forward Lachlan Henderson, despite being in his third AFL season, is simply not ready yet. Further, the Blues haven’t overcome the season-ending loss of ruckman Matthew Kreuzer.

Against Collingwood, Carlton will need something special from their small forwards to cause the upset. In particular Eddie Betts needs to stand up. Betts started the season in brilliant fashion but has struggled of late. One feels that he must kick at least five goals if the Blues are to have any chance.

But I can’t see it happening. Collingwood has knocked over Carlton by around nine goals the last two times they have met. I’m expecting more of the same on Saturday. Back Collingwood to win by over 39.5 points.

Sydney preview

Promising galloper Syreon should give trainer Joseph Pride a pleasant finish to the 2009-10 season by winning at Rosehill this weekend..

Formerly trained by Anne-Marie Ruttley, Syreon has had two barrier trials back from a spell and Pride is looking forward to seeing the galloper in action again.

"He is a classy horse who should run well," Pride told Winning Post.

Syreon is owned by trucking magnate Bob Ruttley and the six-year-old has been lightly raced, with just 14 starts for four wins and as many placings.

"The horse has plenty of potential. He has been out of action for a while but he has been working great and has trialled well," said Pride.

Syreon hasn’t raced since failing behind Walking Or Dancing at Newcastle in March.

"He actually ran great there and has had a good spell since," the trainer said.

Corey Brown will take the ride aboard Syreon and although he has resigned himself to the fact he will run second to Nash Rawiller in the Sydney riders’ premiership battle, he is looking to finish the season with a bang.

"Joe (Pride) has been good to me so it would be nice to be able to finish the racing year on a winning note for both of us," Brown said.

Pride hopes Syreon has plenty of scope for improvement as he is "down" one good horse following the retirement (to stud) of stablemate Bryannbo’s Gift.

Bryannbo’s Gift is a six-year-old stallion raced in the same interests as Syreon.

Crossbow a chance

A highlight of racing at Rosehill this Saturday will be the running of The Rosebud, an important lead-up to the $1 million Golden Rose.

Glamour filly Military Rose is a notable absentee this weekend. She’s going straight to Melbourne to be set for the southern spring carnival.

Gai Waterhouse will send around promising last start winner Crossbow in the two-year-old feature.

"Crossbow is highly talented and should be hard to beat," said Waterhouse’s racing manager Mark Webbey.

"It’s going to be a good race but our horse looks very smart."

Rosehill trainer Tim Martin will send around talented filly Sasa in the same race. The youngster hasn’t raced since running a close second to Skilled in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in the autumn.

Adelaide preview

Darren Weir’s talented filly Broadway Harmony can enhance her value with a second stakes victory when she resumes in Saturday’s Listed Reliance Petroleum Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville..

The Dequetteville Stakes winner from the autumn has shown plenty of promise with two wins and a second from her four races to date. The miss was when she finished three lengths from subsequent Group 1 winner Pressday in the Group 2 Champagne Classic at Doomben.

And that run was excellent, too, as Broadway Harmony had to work early to take up a forward position from barrier 15.

Weir is happy with how his charge has come along since her break.

"We left her in Queensland and she had three weeks up there. Since she has come back she has done well," he explained.

Broadway Harmony has done some travelling in her brief career. She won at Moonee Valley on debut and missed out in a photo to Jesse’s Girl at her next outing.

They met again at Morphettville and Broadway Harmony turned the tables in spectacular style, cruising home by two lengths to add some black type to her pedigree before heading up to Queensland.

Weir is looking forward to her return this week.

"She will benefit from the run but is in good order," he said. Jarrod Fry will go across to ride and he is in form.

"Assuming all goes well we’ll try and find another stakes race for her in coming weeks. She appears to be purely a sprinter so we’ll keep her to five or six furlongs," Weir added.

Saturday’s race is a set weights event restricted to two- and three-year-olds. Broadway Harmony is a two-year-old filly and under the conditions of the race gets in with only 52.5kg — a five-and-a-half kilo advantage over the three-year-old males.

The race, formerly known as the Dermody Stakes, has an impressive honour roll with Redelva (1987), Clay Hero (1988), Street Ruffian (1990), Innovation Girl (2002) and Augusta Proud (2009) among the winners.

Tight track - tight finish

Last week it was the tension between the Red Bull racers that had the F1 world talking, this week the questionable race tactics of Ferrari at Hockenheim has ignited the motorsport media.

At the German GP Felipe Massa was leading when he was allegedly ordered to let teammate Fernando Alonso past. (Alonso had a better position in the Drivers' Championship.) The Ferraris went on to take a rare one-two finish but were subsequently charged with breaking International Sporting Code. They were fined US$100,000 by the FIA and may still faces further sanctions.

However, in a slap in the face to punters everywhere, the result was allowed to stand. Team tactics are nothing new in motorsport but were 'supposedly' banned in Formula 1, opening up the sport to lucrative betting markets globally. We can study a driver's form and his car's performance but how can we know when a team director will pull a swifty to alter the result of an event? Can you imaging Bart Cummings ordering one of his runners in the Cup pulling over to let another horse past?

While debate rages about the questionable tactics of Ferrari at the German GP, the racing takes place this weekend at Hungaroring, Hungary.

The Hungaroring is one of the shorter tracks currently used for Formula 1 at only 4.4 kilometres in length. It contains a number of very tight turns and is considered one of the most physically demanding venues for the drivers. It's bumpy and tough on tyres. Precise cornering is more important than outright speed. Webber recorded the fastest lap here last year while Michael Schumacher holds the outright lap record set in 2004.

Last year the race was won by Jensen Button in the Brawn, the sixth and final win of his Championship season. This year the race represents an opportunity for many in the field to make their mark. The tighter layout at Hungaroring means lower speeds and more chances for those outside the top three or four to have an impact.

Despite its dubious tactics, Ferrari demonstrated last weekend that the championship leaders can be caught on the right venue with the right set-up, and tuning the cars to suit the circuit will again be critical in Hungary. The best way for Ferrari to make the bad publicity go away will be for them to put in another big performance. I think they can again figure on the podium, but I won't be betting on Felipe Massa.

Hamilton and Button were not as sharp in the McLarens in Germany. Recent performance gains by the team have delivered the top spots in the Championship to the British pair but there can be no doubt the cars were not on the pace at Hockenheim. Perhaps they need to emulate the new 'flexible' front wing solution used by both Ferrari and Red Bull last week to once again bring them to the front of the grid.
One theory is that McLaren, with both its drivers at the top of the table, have opted for a more conservative approach to racing. But with eight rounds remaining in the Championship this approach could be fraught with danger.

The team in the best position to upset McLaren is, of course, Red Bull. Dumped abruptly from the headlines this week, Red Bull must be pondering what they need to do to get a win for Sebastian Vettel from pole position. From six pole positions this season the German has only been able to convert one of them into a Grand Prix victory. His last two starts have been dismal, prompting comments that he is spending too much time looking in his mirrors. But if Vettel can get off the line cleanly, both he and Mark Webber can gain some valuable points in Hungary.

The cat was put amongst the pigeons last week when Ferrari upset the McLaren and Red Bull apple carts. Look for both teams to hit back with a bigger effort on Sunday. As usual Robert Kubica will also be lurking thereabouts in the Renault. And no matter how far he is in front, don't bet on Felipe Massa!
NRL Round 21 Previews

The Penrith Panthers and the North Queensland Cowboys kick-off Round 21 at CUA Stadium on Friday night..

Panthers v Cowboys

CUA Stadium

Friday 7.35pm AEST

The Panthers are looking far from rosy despite sitting in second spot on the NRL ladder. Last week’s defeat at the hands of the Storm was their third straight loss and injuries are starting to test out their depth. Prop Tim Grant, lock Luke Lewis and halfback Luke Walsh have been missing recently and it has really showed. However, a home game against the Cowboys looks just the sort of match to get their season back on track. The visitors, though, would at least have taken some confidence out of their golden-point win in Townsville last Saturday. Johnathan Thurston is playing injured but continues to be a menace for opposition sides, and if the Panthers aren’t careful he could well orchestrate an upset. – JM

Lucas: The Panthers desperately need to snap a three game losing streak and they will at CUA Stadium on Friday night. Take them to cover the line.

Marshall: The Panthers, with Luke Walsh back in the side, will hit back with a win. Back them to cover the line.

Bulldogs v Rabbitohs

ANZ Stadium

Friday 7.35pm AEST

The late-season charge towards an unlikely top eight spot has come to a screeching halt for the Bulldogs. They have simply left themselves too much to do and last week’s loss to Parramatta has all but shut the door on any finals chances they had. Six wins from as many games are now needed, and reliance on other results going their way. The Rabbitohs, meanwhile, got back on track with a much-needed win over the Warriors last weekend. After four losses in five games, the Bunnies put themselves back in the top-eight mix, although a broken collarbone to big man Dave Taylor could seriously hinder their chances. – JM

Lucas: The Bulldogs have lost their bite, although the Bunnies’ growing injury list is a major concern. This will be a high-scoring match, so back the total score to be over the line.

Marshall: The Rabbitohs should have too much to play for, but it’ll be close. Back either team under 6½ points.

Eels v Roosters

Parramatta Stadium

Saturday 5.30pm AEST

The Jarryd Hayne show swung into full action last Friday night, with two tries and a try assist inside the opening ten minutes proving the catalyst for Parramatta’s third straight win. Last year’s Dally M Medal winner is making a late play for back-to-back awards, as well as giving his side’s 2010 premiership campaign a push in the right direction. Awaiting the Eels though, are the surprise packet of 2010 – the Sydney Roosters. Brian Smith’s men crossed another bridge last Monday night when, without Mitch Pearce and Nate Myles, they defeated the Broncos in Brisbane. Todd Carney was dominant and Shaun Kenny-Dowall ran in four tries to seal the win. – JM

Lucas: What a cracker – I reckon it’ll be a high scoring match. Eels to win but I’m backing the total game score to be over.

Marshall: I was a huge knocker, but gee the Roosters are starting to win me over. Their defence is still an issue, though, so I’ll go Eels 1-12.

Tigers v Sharks

Leichhardt Oval

Saturday 7.30pm AEST

The Wests Tigers dominated territory and possession to bounce to an early 8-0 lead over the Manly Sea Eagles with a try to lock Chris Heighington and two goals to five-eighth Benji Marshall at Bluetongue Stadium last weekend. But the Tigers eventually buckled under pressure, losing 38-20 to the Sea Eagles in a spiteful encounter as the they stumbled to their first loss in four games. Meanwhile, a change in coaching personnel failed to ignite the Sharks in Canberra on Saturday night with Cronulla going down 20-13 to the Raiders, although rookie Sharks coach Steve Flanagan appeared to enjoy the experience, claiming that his players earned his respect. – PL

Lucas: With a top four finish at stake the Tigers simply cannot afford to drop this one, and they won’t. Take the total game score to be under the line.

Marshall: Wests Tigers will do a number on the Sharks. Have something on them at 30-plus.

Warriors v Titans

Mt Smart Stadium

Sunday 12.00pm AEST

The Warriors came back to earth last weekend at ANZ Stadium with a 38-28 loss to the Rabbitohs in a game played in two halves. The Warriors led 20-10 at the break but the floodgates opened in the second half with the Bunnies scoring five tries to claim the win and according to Warriors coach Ivan Cleary it was a good wake-up call for his players : "At the end of the day we got what we deserved and they deserved the win," Cleary said after their first loss in six matches. The Gold Coast Titans kept their premiership hopes alive with a gutsy 11-10 win over the St George Illawarra Dragons at WIN Jubilee Oval last weekend, after Matt Rogers drilled a field goal in the final minute of golden point extra time, and Titans coach John Cartwright took a swing at the critics for writing his team off after their recent lack-lustre efforts. – PL

Lucas: I’m tipping this will be a low scoring and bruising encounter, with a top four finish possibly on the line. Warriors to win.

Marshall: Last week’s upset win will mean little for the Titans unless they consolidate with another this week. Back the Titans straight out.

Storm v Raiders

AAMI Park

Sunday 2.00pm

They may not be playing for premiership points but the Melbourne Storm are fast becoming a major distraction to a number of teams aspiring to go all the way in 2010 – just ask Penrith coach Matthew Elliott after his team went down to the Storm 18-10 at AAMI Park in round 20, in an ugly error-filled affair. The Canberra Raiders kept their finals chances alive with 20-13 win over the Sharks in round 20, although the win did come at a cost with Scott Logan and Josh Dugan joining a mounting injury list that includes skipper Alan Tongue, who is struggling with a groin and he could miss the remainder of the season. – PL

Lucas: I’ve put the cue in the rack so to speak, in regard to betting on Storm games. But just for the record, Storm to win a low-scoring game.

Marshall: The Storm made plenty of errors last week but still won. Expect them to be sharper this week. I’m very keen on the total match score to be over the line.

Broncos v Dragons

Suncorp Stadium

Sunday 3.00pm

The Brisbane Broncos dropped out of the top eight after Monday night’s 34-30 loss to the Roosters and they face a massive challenge against competition leaders St George Illawarra at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday. The match will be played without Ben Te'o, who broke his foot on Monday night, and it is worthwhile noting that since their five-match winning streak ended, Brisbane has now gone loss-win-loss-bye-win-loss. With the winning post in sight, are the Dragons once again losing their mojo at the business end of the season after last weekend’s 11-10 golden point home loss to the Titans? I think not. Yes, the odd crack in their game plan has surfaced, but they deserve the title of season 2010 front-runners and as Wayne Bennett pointed out after their loss last weekend, they have been playing quality teams recently. – PL

Lucas: Both teams will lift for this all-important clash between two extremely proud clubs. Take the total game score to be over the line.

Marshall: The Dragons, in 2010 anyway, don’t lose two in a row. They’ll win a close one.

Knights v Sea Eagles

EnergyAustralia Stadium

Monday 7.00pm

The Newcastle Knights’ finals hopes went up in smoke after last weekend’s 28-24 loss to the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville. Granted, the Knights do have a mathematical chance of playing finals football but in reality they have no chance of extending their season beyond the home and away rounds and for Rick Stone and his players, they can now concentrate on 2011 and beyond. Manly’s surge towards the top four gained momentum with last weekend’s 38-20 victory over the Wests Tigers in a spiteful encounter at Bluetongue Stadium – the Sea Eagles scored six tries to four to move up to fourth and skipper Jamie Lyon was outstanding, scoring two tries and kicking seven from seven. – PL

Lucas: The Sea Eagles need to keep winning in the lead-up to the finals, and they will. Sea Eagles to cover the line.

Marshall: I think Manly will be too strong but at home the Knights will probably start well. Back the Knights/Sea Eagles half-time/full-time double.

US PGA TOUR Update

The US PGA TOUR moves to West Virginia this week for The Greenbrier Classic and despite the absence of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson a top class field will tee-off at The Old White Course..

The Greenbrier Classic replaces the Buick Open on the TOUR roster and for most of the field it’ll be a learning experience on The Old White Course layout and according to the players a premium will be placed on distance control with irons and greens hit.

Contenders:

· Jim Furyk ($17): As the highest ranked player in the field and two wins in 2010 Furyk will start favourite, and a win this week will elevate him to the top of the FedEx Cup points table, but we’re prepared to lay him at The Old White Course.

· Jeff Overton ($29): With four top-5 finishes in his last nine events, including a T-11 at the Open Championship at St. Andrews, he’s due to break through for his maiden win on the US PGA Tour.

· Carl Pettersson ($41): Pettersson rallied to win the Canadian Open last week for his fourth PGA TOUR victory, following his tournament-record 60 with a 3-under 67 for a one-stroke victory – can he go back-to-back? – We think not.

· Greg Chalmers ($81): Chalmers shot a final-round 65 at the Canadian Open last week for his second top-five finish of the season and he’s had eight consecutive rounds of par or better and the pressure is off now that he’s secured his full playing rights for 2011.

· Nick Watney ($23): With six top-10s this season Watney ranks third in greens in regulation, eighth in ball-striking, 12th in birdie average and eighth in birdies or better on par 4s and he’s well overdue to claim his first title since winning the Buick Invitational in February 2009.

· Matt Kuchar ($21): Kuchar is the highest-ranked player (7th) in the FedExCup standings without a win and surely he’s due after posting four top 10s in his last five starts.

· Charley Hoffman ($51): Two top 10s in his last two starts indicates that he’s ready to break through for his first win since 2007.

· Kevin Na ($51): The South Korean carded four sub-70 rounds at last week’s Canadian Open and with three top-10 finishes in 2010, including a T2 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and he cannot be ignored.

· Trevor Immelman ($41): With a T23 at the British Open and T13 at the Canadian Open, the 2008 Masters Champion is beginning to rediscover his game after battling a wrist injury.

· Charlie Wi ($41): Leads the TOUR with an active streak of 13 consecutive rounds of par or better and he’s coming off T4 at last week’s Canadian Open.

· Brendon de Jonge ($51): Has four top 15s in his last six starts and he leads the TOUR with an active streak of nine consecutive rounds under par.

· Sergio Garcia ($41): With just one top 10 in 2010 from 12 starts on the US PGA TOUR the volatile Spaniard appears disinterested; mind you, he has the ability to curve up this course and at $41 he represents good each way value.

Tickets on sale for season opener

Melbourne Heart FC Chief Executive Officer Scott Munn has encouraged fans to book their seats early after announcing the launch of ticket sales for the Club’s inaugural season..

With its Hyundai A-League debut just over a week away, tickets to Heart’s home matches at AAMI Park, including ‘the Melbourne Derby’, are set to go on sale at Ticketek from 9am on Friday 30 July.

However, tickets to the Club’s season opener against the Central Coast Mariners will be on sale from 9am today.

Ticket prices start at just $5 for juniors and $25 for adults, representing outstanding value for all fans of the beautiful game.

Drawing upon a wealth of experience, Heart Head Coach John van ‘t Schip and assistants Ante Milicic and Jesper Olsen hope to deliver an exciting brand of football, having been influenced by some of the greatest innovators in world football, including Johan Cruyff and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Among the players poised to take to the park during the upcoming season include Socceroos John Aloisi, Josip Skoko and 2010 FIFA World Cup representative Michael Beauchamp, as well as Club Captain Simon Colosimo.

Munn believes the release of tickets for the Club’s foundation season marks another major milestone in Melbourne Heart FC history.

“The Club has come a very long way in a relatively short period of time, and it is amazing to consider we are now on the cusp of finally making our Hyundai A-League bow,” he said.

“AAMI Park has been a welcome addition to the Melbourne sporting landscape and will certainly add a unique element to the match day experience.

“With unrivalled sightlines and world class amenities, AAMI Park is the perfect stage for the Club to make its debut. We are delighted to be able to call the stadium our true home.”

The AFL Match Review Panel has reviewed the weekend’s matches and the following charges were laid..

Charges Laid:

Campbell Brown, Hawthorn, has been charged with a Level Three striking offence against Nick Dal Santo, St Kilda, during the first quarter of the Round 17 match between Hawthorn and St Kilda, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday July 23, 2010.

In summary, his previous poor record means that his two-game sanction must remain at two games, even with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of two matches suspended within the last three years, which increases the penalty by 20 per cent to 270 demerit points. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 202.50 points and a two-game sanction.

Ashton Hams, West Coast, has been charged with a Level Four engaging in rough conduct offence against Dennis Armfield, Carlton, during the second quarter of the Round 17 match between West Coast and Carlton, played at Subiaco on Saturday July 24, 2010.

In summary, he can accept a three-match sanction with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), high impact (three points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of seven activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Four offence, drawing 425 demerit points and a four-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 318.75 points and a three-match sanction.

Ben Cunnington, North Melbourne, has been charged with a first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire (Jason Armstrong) during the first quarter of the Round 17 match between North Melbourne and Essendon, played at Etihad Stadium on Saturday July 24, 2010.

In summary, he can accept an $900 sanction with an early plea.

A first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire is a $1200 sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to an $900 sanction.

Graham Johncock, Adelaide Crows, has been charged with a Level Three engaging in rough conduct offence against Cameron Hitchcock, Port Adelaide, during the second quarter of the Round 17 match between the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide, played at AAMI Stadium on Sunday July 25, 2010.

In summary, due to his five-year good record, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three offence, drawing 325 demerit points and a three-match sanction. He has an existing five-year good record, which reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 243.75 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 182.81 points and a one-match sanction.

Other incidents assessed:

The match day report laid against the Brisbane Lions’ Brent Staker for striking the Geelong Cats’ Darren Milburn was assessed. It was the view of the panel that Staker was attempting to tackle the Geelong player. Initial contact was made to Milburn’s back and Staker’s hand was open at all times, in a tackling motion. The action was not considered to be a striking motion and no further action was taken.

The match day report laid against Carlton’s Jarrad Waite for engaging in rough conduct against West Coast’s Adam Selwood was assessed. The panel said that Selwood had kicked the ball when Waite made contact with a bump. Contact was made to Selwood’s shoulder area and the action was not considered to be a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between St Kilda’s Stephen Milne and Hawthorn’s Thomas Murphy from the first quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. The panel said contact was made with an open hand and it was their view that the contact was a pushing motion. The medical report on player Murphy said he was not assessed after the incident and he required no medical treatment for the contact. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Brisbane Lions’ Matt Maguire and the Geelong Cats’ Steve Johnson from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was investigated. The panel conducted an investigation into the contact that was made after the vision available was not conclusive. Based on the evidence received from both parties, the investigation determined the contact was accidental and no further action was taken.

AFL express concerns

AFL General Manager, Football Operations Adrian Anderson said yesterday the AFL had met on the matter of the Etihad Stadium ground surface..

Mr Anderson said he convened a meeting of senior AFL Football Operations staff, turf experts and AFL Players Association representatives, including CEO Matt Finnis, with Etihad Stadium staff, including chief executive Ian Collins.

Mr Anderson said the AFL expressed its concern about the slippery nature of the ground during last Friday night’s match between St Kilda and Hawthorn.

Etihad Stadium has agreed to immediately implement a number of measures to improve the surface of the ground. These include:

· Hollow coring the ground to aerate it. This was done on Saturday before the match between North Melbourne and Essendon but was not done before Friday night’s game.

· Top-dressing the ground weekly, rather than fortnightly, to provide extra traction for players.

· Consider other recommendations from the AFL’s turf consultant.

· Make a recommendation to players on the type of boots they should wear on the ground

Mr Anderson said he had received advice that there was no evidence the surface at Etihad Stadium was not safe for AFL football, but said the slipperiness of the surface for last Friday’s game was unsatisfactory.

He said Etihad Stadium management was confident the measures proposed would reduce the slippery nature of the surface.

“We all want to see our players playing on the best surface possible and Etihad Stadium is working with us to do whatever is needed to improve the surface.”

Melbourne Heart sign Behich and Tomic

Melbourne Heart FC is placing the finishing touches on its inaugural Hyundai A-League squad after signing former Sydney United utility Ante Tomic..

The speedy left-sided 18-year-old resisted overtures from a number of Hyundai A-League clubs to sign a one-year deal to join the competition newcomer following a breakout debut season in the NSW Premier League.

And Tomic will be joined by another promising teenager, with former Melbourne Victory youth team Captain Aziz Behich signing for seven weeks as an injury replacement player for Kristian Sarkies.

Behich impressed in his trial period with the Club, featuring in games against Everton FC, Newcastle Jets and Brisbane Roar to earn a professional deal.

Head Coach John van ‘t Schip is confident Behich and Tomic will be able to provide added depth to the Club’s squad and press for a place in the line-up on match-day.

“Ante and Aziz have proved themselves to be excellent talents and trainers throughout their time at the Club, and I feel they will certainly add an extra dimension to our squad,” he said.

“With youth a key focus of the Club’s philosophy, we are pleased to have signed such promising youngsters. They are very raw talents that we are confident can develop into exceptional professionals while working with the likes of Simon Colosimo, Josip Skoko and John Aloisi.

“In relation to Aziz, we are very pleased to give him another opportunity at the elite level. One of the great benefits of more professional clubs in Australia is the greater opportunities it gives to young players to stay in the sport during their important development years.”

Tomic’s signing marks the culmination of a meteoric rise for the swashbuckling winger, who was entrenched in Sydney United’s junior system only 12 months ago before being elevated to the Under 21 side by Heart’s Ante Milicic, who served as Head Coach at the Club last season.

Behich meanwhile arrives at the Club having played a role in the Hyundai A-League 2010 Grand Final, featuring as a second half substitute as Sydney FC claimed the national title in a penalty shootout, while he was also named in Victory’s squad for the 2010 AFC Champions League.

The arrival of Tomic and Behich brings the total number of players signed by Heart to 21, which, significantly, includes 11 fresh arrivals to the Hyundai A-League.

Collingwood lock-in key trio

The Collingwood Football Club wishes to announce that Alan Didak, Steele Sidebottom and Ben Reid have all signed new contracts with the club..

Didak has committed for a further three seasons, tying him to the club until the end of 2013 and extending his Collingwood career to 13 seasons, while Sidebottom and Reid have each committed to two-year deals, meaning they will be Magpies until at least the end of 2012.

Player profiles

Alan Didak

Didak, 27, was drafted with the third overall pick in the 2000 draft from Port Adelaide in the SANFL. He was a key member of the 2002 and 2003 grand finals teams, and won his first Copeland Trophy and All Australian guernsey in 2006. In 2008 Didak was on track for his second best-and-fairest and was leading the AFL in kicks before missing the final six matches, including finals, due to a club-imposed suspension. But he has rebounded from that setback superbly and is in career-best form in 2010. Didak has played 174 games and booted 244 goals.

Steele Sidebottom

Sidebottom was drafted from the Murray Bushrangers with the 11th overall pick at the end of 2008, and in just second season has established himself as a crucial part of the Collingwood side. After 11 games in his debut season last year, including an exceptional performance against Adelaide in the memorable semi-final victory, the 19-year-old has played 16 matches and booted 16 goals playing mainly as a half forward, with stints in the midfield, in 2010. He kicked five goals in the big win over the Kangaroos this year, and is averaging 17.7 possessions and 4.3 tackles per game.

Ben Reid

Reid was selected by Collingwood with the eighth overall pick in the 2006 draft from Murray Bushrangers. The Magpies acquired the pick as part of the deal that sent Chris Tarrant to Fremantle. Reid spent his first two seasons learning to play mainly as a forward, however after playing very well as a key defender in the VFL in 2009, the 21-year-old has taken his chance at senior level in 2010, having played 14 impressive AFL games, as well has having been the round 12 nomination for the AFL Rising Star award. He has played 22 games and kicked three goals.
